Cooperation with Chile

Since 2014 I serve as chair of the European delegation to the Joint Parliamentary Committee EU-Chile (D-CL). The committee was founded in 2003, after the EU and Chile had signed an association agreement. The agreement explicitly calls for cooperation between the European Parliament and the National Congress of Chile.

The committee has the task of monitoring all aspects of the EU-Chile relationship, particularly the implementation of the association agreement. We meet in Brussels or Chile at least once a year. Europeans and Chileans take turns in chairing the meetings. The committee members of both sides can make policy recommendations to the Association Council, the European Parliament and the National Congress. Thus we can actively participate in consolidating our mutual relationship, in exchanging our experiences for the resolution of social issues and in working towards sustainable development. In this respect, we focus our work especially on the areas of politics, economics, trade and cooperation.
